§ FAQ · FIG 0.4
Honest answers.
Is there a subscription tier I'm missing? +
No. We considered an "Indie API" subscription tier at $49/month and explicitly killed it after the 2026-06-06 board pricing review. $1 per verdict scales linearly with use; a subscription would charge you for verdicts you didn't run. Volume discounts kick in automatically at 1,000+/month so you never need to negotiate.
What's the actual per-verdict cost we're paying? +
For Platform-tier customers we publish a per-verdict cost decomposition: USPTO bulk subscription + EUIPO API + WHOIS + handle provider APIs + LLM-API inference for the cross-cultural panel + Railway compute. The total per-verdict marginal cost at our current volume is approximately $0.05; gross margin on the $1 list price is ~95%. The decomposition lives in the /coverage spec.
What does Forge include that the API doesn't? +
Three things the API can't deliver: (1) a USPTO Class-9/42 TM-filing prep package (Nice classification, recommended description language, specimen guidance), (2) a strategist gut-check sentence from a human reviewer, and (3) a signed PDF dossier formatted for counsel review. The verdict object underneath is the same; Forge is the human-readable package built around it.
Can I self-host? +
Not currently. The scoring engine and the 8.1M-row USPTO reg-and-serial index are proprietary and hosted at api.etymolt.com. The MCP shell, framework adapters, and methodology are open under MIT/CC-BY-4.0 — see the GitHub. Self-hosted enterprise deployment is on the Platform-tier roadmap for orgs with data-residency requirements.
What's your refund policy on Forge? +
Forge is non-refundable once the dossier is delivered, because the work is bespoke and the signed PDF is timestamped at issuance. If the dossier surfaces a hard-blocker that materially changes our recommendation between order and delivery, we'll re-run for free.
Can I get a spend cap? +
Yes. Email us with the cap and we'll set it on the account. Spend caps default to OFF on the free tier (you can't overspend $0) and default ON at $250 for new paid accounts — you can change it from the account dashboard.
Do you offer credits for OSS projects, students, or grant-funded research? +
Yes. We grant verdict credits to OSS maintainers, students, and grant-funded research projects on a case-by-case basis. Email tariq@etymolt.com with a one-line description.
